"Synapse!" Gnos screamed into his headset. "Are these guys tapped?!" Bullets ripped through the car at his back; glass rained down on the asphalt around him.

"Just a sec," the hacker replied. His eternal mellow couldn't touch Gnos' raging adrenal gland. "This spook has dozens of taps all over the city. I gotta run the data through GPS."

"Less talk, more type." Gnos slid a fresh clip into his smartgun. "I don't wanna take these guys out if they're tapped, but they're kinda forcing my hand." He heard a bullet thunk into the chassis directly behind him. "Throw me a bone, here!"

"I'll throw you the whole steak!" Synapse's fingers raced over the keyboard. He'd locked onto the cops' signals and hacked his way into their brains. The torrent of data that flowed over the Plexus was mind-boggling, but Synapse knew what he was looking for. He isolated the subnets that represented their motor cortices and entered the zero command, depolarizing thousands of neurons at once.

The street went suddenly silent. The cops fell to the ground like puppets with their strings cut. "Now, they're untapped."
